Diabetic Footwear and more

The American Diabetes Association estimates approximately ¼ of the Medicare age population have Diabetes. It is also estimated that at least 10-15% of those with diabetes will contract a diabetic foot ulcer at least once in their lifetime. The diabetic footwear program was developed to assist these individuals to help prevent the formation of diabetic ulcers. Many insurance companies do offer coverage for the benefit of extra-depth shoes for qualifying patients with diabetes.

If the shoe has been certified by the appropriate agency and has passed the following requirements, then it will qualify as diabetic footwear:

  • The shoe must have at least 1/16” inch of removable depth
  • The shoe must have closure of lace or Velcro
  • The shoe must come in a variety of widths and sizes

One Step Ahead & HME offers Dr. Comfort, Aetrex, Drew, I-Runner, and Orthofeet brands for diabetic footwear. These shoes come in a variety of styles and colors.

Who does the consultation for diabetic shoes?

The Consultation and Fitting Process

Once the qualifying paperwork and documentation required by your insurance is received, you will be contacted for an appointment for a diabetic shoe assessment. During this appointment your Pedorthist or Shoe Fitter will assess your feet and discuss any issues you may be experiencing.  You will be measured to determine the appropriate shoe size, and you will be able to select a shoe style.

We will then order your shoes and when they are received, we will contact you to schedule an appointment for your fitting.   During this fitting, the diabetic footwear will be checked for fit and comfort, as well as answer any questions or concerns you may have.
