One Step Ahead & HME has been providing quality medical products and related services for residents of Fairfield and the surrounding communities since 2005.  We are a local, family owned and operated company, and we have a staff with over 50 combined years of health care experience.


Our staff is always available and willing to answer your questions when you visit our store.   We are here to assist you in any way that we are able to.   Our primary focus is providing you with superior service and custom care.

One Step Ahead & HME's exceptional staff includes 3 certified pedorthists: Lucy Potts, Christina Simpson, and Kirsten Melton.   Our certified pedorthists have received extensive training and earned their credentials, and they'll help you with specialized footwear.

Certified Mastectomy Fitters

Lucy Potts and Christina Simpson have been trained and are qualified to help you with measurements, fitting, dispensing, and adjusting prostheses, bras, and related supplies.

Certified Respiratory Therapist

Neil Austin, our respiratory therapist, enables us to provide you with a range of respiratory care services in our store and in your home. Neil is trained and certified to help you with numerous respiratory needs:


  • Administering and maintaining home oxygen
  • Assisting you with CPAP and BiPAP therapy
  • Other respiratory supplies and treatments

Accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Health Care

One Step Ahead & HME is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC) in Illinois to ensure patient-focused, quality, clearly written standards for our home medical equipment organization. ACHC is a leader in durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS) accreditation.  We provide HME services, which is the delivery, set up, and / or maintenance of medical equipment and / or oxygen and all education regarding the use of the equipment.


We provide respiratory care service (RCS) by a licensed respiratory care practitioner. RCS is ongoing hands-on care of the client / patient, which may include an assessment and / or education of a respiratory condition.


Our Fitter Services provide orthotic / prosthetic fitting of a variety of products such as diabetic shoes, soft orthotic appliances, and post-mastectomy breast prostheses.

Accreditation is a process in which certification of competency, authority, or credibility is presented. Being accredited, One Step Ahead & HME can assure you that our trained professionals have the skill and judgment to provide service related to the preservation or improvement of the health of individuals or the treatment or care of individuals who are injured, sick, disabled, or infirm.
